In this series, the images are photographed from the point of view of a small child – seeing new objects for climbing, exploring the quirky creatures and discovering new fun. However, they are processed through the eyes of an adult, seeing the fun and the wonder, yet fearful about the things that could possibly go wrong. One can imagine children entering the playground filled with delight while adults stand on alert – concerned about bullying, anxious over suspicious individuals, every watchful for a missing child. All of these emotions dance alongside a child’s wonder at making new friends, of running through a new and relatively unstructured environment with wild abandon. Although there are no children or adults in the images, the tensions of contemporary playground society are portrayed through the angles, the close-ups, and the black and white process. This series began as a study about childhood and how it has changed; it may have become a commentary on a changing society and the tensions of modern life.
